This project is part of the City of Vernon's 2025 to 2029 Five-Year Rolling Infrastructure Plan, is identified in the Building Facility Renewal Asset Management Plan as a project in 2026 and further supported by a detailed condition assessment of the ice plant at Kal Tire Place. Through the Building Facility Renewal Asset Management Plan and condition assessment it was determined that the condenser at Kal Tire Place has reached the end of its service life and is showing signs of deterioration, including corrosion on the internal coil.
The City is planning on replacing the old condenser with a new unit. The proposed new unit has the ability to operate without water for approximately 90% of the year, which provides huge water savings each year. Additionally, the new unit will use significantly less ammonia coolant than the existing unit, drastically enhancing the safety of the ice plant.
To minimize disruptions to user groups, the City is planning on replacing the unit during the next scheduled ice plant shutdown, planned for summer 2026.
