Climate change has become a part of our daily lives, and we are all experiencing its effects. Therefore, it’s more important than ever that our communities are strong, and able to withstand these effects and have ways to take care of ourselves and each other. Building climate resilient communities means both empowering citizens to be prepared for the effects of climate change and providing networks and infrastructure to ensure everyone can stay healthy under the effects of climate change.
To start cultivating climate resilient communities, the City of Vernon and Youth Climate Corps BC are putting on a series of resiliency workshops. The community is invited to attend these workshops and be guided through simple do it yourself projects that can help reduce the impact of climate change. All materials are included in the workshop as well as instructions so participants can feel empowered to teach others how to create these tools.

Air Filter Workshops
In this workshop participants will create simple air filters using a box fan and filter. This filter can be used in your home to clean the air during periods of intense wildfire smoke or air pollution. Participants will be instructed step by step how to make these filters, and all materials will be provided as well as take home instructions so participants can teach others how to build these air filters.

Emergency Preparedness
Join the Climate Action and Emergency Services departments for a workshop about resiliency and emergency preparedness. This workshop will cover the basics of making a grab and go bag, creating your emergency plan and discussing how you and your network can be prepared for emergencies like wildfires, flood risks and more. Registration and all materials are free, and door prizes will be randomly given out throughout the workshop.
There are two workshop options on May 5th. One is for community members and will dive into your own emergency plans for your household. The other is for service providers to help think of ways your clients and organizations can be more resilient and prepared for emergencies. Snacks and refreshments will be provided at both!
