Recreation Leader

The positions' hours of work are varied. It is essential that the ideal candidate has strong interpersonal skills, is energetic and enthusiastic, is well organized plus is able to communicate effectively (verbal and written) with all levels of internal and external contacts.

The successful candidates must have the ability to provide leadership for a variety of recreation programs and activities. Applicants must have the ability to plan and lead structured programs with a focus on a variety of sport and fundamental movement skills. Class 4 drivers license is mandatory.


  • Planning outlines of program activities
  • Organizing and implementing activities;
  • Coaching and monitoring children in their activities;
  • Lead and orient staff and volunteers in providing quality recreation programs.
  • Institute and enforce rules and procedures for participants and staff.
  • Ensure participant welfare during all activities.
  • Ensure the proper handling of first aid and emergency situations.
  • Prepare equipment and supplies for programs.
  • Set up and take down of equipment, etc;
  • Performs and partakes in other duties and activities as required and related to the program.
  • Drives the Recreation Centre 23 passenger bus to pick up program participants or shuttle participants between locations.


  • Minimum of 8 hours training in child development, guidance, health and safety. High Five 100 and or Fundamental Movement Skills training
  • Coaching certification or equivalent demonstrated coaching experience
  • Valid BC Class 4 drivers License
  • Experience developing and leading recreation opportunities.
  • Experience working with children in a recreational setting.
    • Must be able to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
    • Ability to be imaginative and flexible to ensure a fun environment for participants.
    • Ability to work as an effective team member.
    • Clear Criminal Records Check with vulnerable sector
    • Current Emergency First Aid and CPR C required.
    • Physical strength and ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
Skating Instructor / Assistant

Be part of a dynamic team responsible for teaching fun and creative Learn to Skate and/or Learn to Play Hockey programs here at Recreation Services. Our Department is currently looking for self-motivated, responsible, energetic and enthusiastic skaters with strong interpersonal skills to plan and lead structured lessons for children and adults working on a casual basis as Skating Instructors.

This is recreation work that involves instructing skate programs, preparing individual program plans and promoting interest and encouraging participation in program activity. Instructors ensure that participants have a positive experience and are performing the skills in a safe manner as set out in the established programs. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated by a supervisor in terms of effectiveness of instruction and services provided and conformance to established practices.


  • Instructs programs, such as learn to skate, learn to play hockey and the basics of other arena sports, using techniques in compliance with program standards.
  • Performs set up and take down of equipment.
  • Checks that equipment is in good working order by making minor adjustments and informing supervisors when repairs are required.
  • Demonstrates skating techniques to individuals and groups of all ages and abilities.
  • Fills out progress cards at the end of each session, evaluating skaters on a variety of criteria.
  • Prepares individual program plans for review by a supervisor.
  • Performs other related duties as required.



  • Sound knowledge of the methods used to instruct skating skills.
  • Working knowledge of the theory of body mechanics and movement related to skating.
  • Demonstrated ability to skate proficiently.
  • Ability to provide instruction in a fun, safe, controlled and organized manner.
  • Ability to answer general questions related to ice programs, arena sports and skating equipment.
  • Ability to understand, follow and carry out oral and written communications.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, instruct and demonstrate ice skating skills and techniques to a diverse range of individuals and groups of all ages and abilities.
  • Ability to maintain control and exercise influence with tact and diplomacy in a professional and calm manner.

Reporting to the, Aquatic Supervisor.  This position provides instruction for the Synchronized Swimming Program for athletes between the ages of 6 and 18, and may be at the recreational or provincial level.  Coaches are required to have previous Synchro experience and current certification as a Synchro Instructor, Water Safety Instructor or Competition Introduction - trained.  Short listed applicants will be required to have a current criminal record check.

Volleyball Ref

This position is responsible for setting up and providing volleyball equipment, refereeing and maintaining records of scheduled games for Vernon Volleyball leagues for Recreation Services.

Duties Include:

  • Referees volleyball league games

  • Sets up and take down of volleyball nets

  • Fills out a scoresheet for each game

  • Inspects program area and equipment as well as recommends maintenance and repair

  • Act as a liaison between teams and the programmer

  • Performs other duties as required.

Required Education And Experience:

  • Must be at least 15 yrs or older

  • Previous certification or sufficient experience in volleyball required

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:


  • Knowledge of volleyball rules & Vernon volleyball regulations

  • Ability to lift 25 lbs

  • Ability to understand and work from written and oral instructions

  • Ability to deal with the public in a courteous and friendly manner.

  • Ability to get to and from gymnasiums with some mode of transportation.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:

  • Volleyball referee course

  • Basic first aid

Recreation Services is looking for enthusiastic individuals who are interested in assisting people with physical, sensory, or intellectual challenges in an aquatic environment.  No formal training is required but experience assisting people in an aquatic environment is preferred.
Hours of work will vary.  
Example shifts could include part or all of:
Week days 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Weekdays 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Saturdays 9:30 - 1:30 p.m.
Wage is $15.00 per hour

Recreation Services provides a variety of volunteer opportunities for people of all ages.

Volunteers must be 13 years of age or older and successfully complete the application process which includes reference checks, a criminal record check and an interview.

Volunteer Opportunities

Aquatics - Qualified volunteers assist staff during swimming lessons and may provide 1:1 support for participants who require some additional help. AWSI minimum requirement.

Fitness - Volunteers assist with fitness gym safety monitoring and equipment tidy up.
General Recreation - Volunteers assist with art, basketball, hockey, soccer, skating programs and so much more. If you have an interest or passion we will work with you to find a suitable placement.

Special Events - Volunteers are an integral part of our special events. From special event nights, celebrations to swim with Santa. If you love special events, get connected.

Do you have an idea for a NEW program, send us a proposal package. Start by developing a clear vision for your program, including a title, program objectives, description, and requirements for space and equipment. When your ready with your Program Proposal Form, submit it along with your resume and any relevant certificates to the Recreation Programs department and the Vernon Recreation Centre.
