The 43rd Avenue Corridor Improvement Project is part of the City of Vernon's 2025 to 2029 Five-Year Rolling Infrastructure Plan and is designed to support the new Active Living Centre (ALC). The project includes building a roundabout at the intersection of 43rd Avenue, Alexis Park Drive, and Old Kamloops Road to manage the expected increase in traffic from the ALC. This roundabout will improve traffic flow and safety by allowing more vehicles to move through the area at lower speeds. The project also involves upgrading underground utilities such as sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and water mains where necessary. A new multi-use path will be constructed to connect the ALC with the city's active transportation network, with future extensions planned along 43rd Avenue to the west and Alexis Park Drive to the south.

The roundabout design is subject to change, and is being guided by Professional Engineers specializing in transportation engineering and design. The design will be finalized in the fall of 2025. An open house will be held in early 2026, and the public will be invited to meet the design team, ask questions, and provide feedback.

Construction work to renew some underground utilities is scheduled to begin in fall 2025. The primary phase of construction will commence in spring 2026, with construction completion anticipated by fall 2026.

LATEST UPDATE JANUARY 9, 2026: The 43 Avenue Corridor Improvement Project design will be presented to Council on January 12, 2026.

Previous updates:

December 15, 2025: The 43 Avenue Corridor Improvement Project design will be presented to Council in January 2026.

November 24, 2025: To ensure a safe and efficient transition between the work completed in fall 2025 and the work planned in 2026, the City will install a temporary centre median at 43 Avenue and 35 Street. Recommended by the transportation engineer following a detailed review, this measure will restrict left turns from 43 Ave on to 35 St through winter to improve safety and maintain traffic flow during the construction pause.

The interim configuration aligns with the future intersection layout, reducing conflict points and improving safety for all road users. This change has been coordinated with School District 22 and bus routes have already been changed for Alexis Park Elementary.

The 2026 work is scheduled to resume in March 2026, weather permitting. Administration will bring forward the recommended geometry changes to the roundabout and the work planned for 2026 to the December 15, 2025 Council meeting.

October 27, 2025: The new multi-use path from 32nd Street to 35th Street is scheduled for paving during the week of October 20th, 2025. The project is scheduled to be completed on time this fall.
