Residents are invited to join Vernon firefighters in a new way this year, as they take part in Muscular Dystrophy Awareness month by hosting their annual Fill the Boot campaign virtually.
Until Sunday (November 1), Vernon firefighters will have boots set up at the tills of the Vernon Square Safeway to collect donations for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
“Normally, we would have firefighters set up at various locations around town to collect community donations throughout the weekend,” said Christy Poirier, Manager, Communications and Grants. “However, this year will be different as we all continue practicing physical distancing and help raise funds in new and virtual ways.”
For those who are interested in donating to the cause, but want to stick to a virtual platform, donations can be made online here.
Boot location: Safeway, Vernon Square
When: Friday, October 30 – Sunday, November 1
Or online: https://muscle.akaraisin.com/ui/virtualfilltheboot/t/vernonfirefighters
Funds raised by the Vernon firefighters are used to provide support for those living with muscular dystrophy- a group of over 160 types of neuromuscular disorders that are characterized by the wasting and progressive weakness of muscles. Over time, many people with muscular dystrophy are unable to walk, speak, or ultimately breathe. Some diseases are life-threatening and currently, there is no cure. These funds help support research, education, services and equipment.
Firefighters across Canada have helped Fill the Boot to support Muscular Dystrophy Canada for more than 65 years. For more information on the annual campaign, please visit www.filltheboot.ca.
