On Saturday, April 18, Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) will host a regional Engine Boss (ENGB) training exercise, as part of ongoing preparations for the upcoming wildfire season.

Residents may notice an increased presence of fire trucks, equipment and fire crews in several neighbourhoods throughout the day. This activity is part of a planned training exercise, and no live fire will be used.

This training prepares municipal and regional firefighters with the skills and knowledge needed to serve as an Engine Boss in structure defense, including in wildland–urban interface situations.

Approximately 42 participants, representing seven to eight regional departments and approximately 15 pieces of apparatus, will take part in the exercise. VFRS is hosting the training, with instruction provided by BC Wildfire Service.

“This type of training is critical to ensuring our officers and crews are prepared to lead and operate effectively during complex wildfire incidents,” said VFRS Fire Chief David Lind. “Working through realistic scenarios alongside regional partners improves coordination and strengthens community safety.”

Firefighters will be operating in Sunset Properties, Kokanee Estates, Beverley Hills Estates, and the Outback area, with initial apparatus staging at Okanagan Landing Elementary School before crews deploy to assigned locations.

VFRS thanks residents for their understanding and support as firefighters train to strengthen regional readiness and help keep the community safe during wildfire season.
