Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) responded to two separate fire incidents Tuesday afternoon.
Just before 12:00pm today (December 10), firefighters were called to a structure fire in the 6000 block of Blue Jay Road.
“The homeowner had been away from the house for a little while today and upon returning home, saw smoke coming from the windows,” said Deputy Chief Dwight Seymour. “When they opened a door, the homeowner saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the basement and called 911.”
Upon arriving, VFRS found a two-storey single family residence fully involved. A total of 14 firefighters and 3 apparatus responded to the call and suppressed the fire, containing the damage to a single structure.
“Everyone was out of the house when we arrived, and no injuries were reported,” said Deputy Chief Seymour.
BC Ambulance Service, FortisBC, BC Hydro and Emergency Support Services (ESS) also attended the scene and ESS is now assisting the homeowners.
At approximately 1:40pm today, crews were also called to a vehicle fire in the 200 block of Melrose Court after some commercial equipment in the back of a truck caught fire. When firefighters arrived, the truck was fully involved and fire was starting to spread to some nearby landscaping.
“Once on scene, crews were able to knock down the fire quickly,” said Fire Chief David Lind. “The truck and the equipment will be a total loss; however, thanks to the hard work and expertise of the members on scene, the fire did not spread to a nearby structure.”
Again, no injuries were reported. Both incidents are now under investigation and neither incident is considered suspicious.
