An impressive 913 Vernon and North Okanagan riders and 91 teams joined others from across the province in riding their bikes, scooters, skateboards and other small wheels during Spring GoByBike during the week of May 29 to June 4, 2023.
The City of Vernon would like to thank everyone who rode during the week and joined the challenge. Together, Vernon and North Okanagan riders rode 34,028 kilometers and saved 7377 kg of greenhouse gases by choosing to travel by active transportation.
“Vernon riders were enthusiastic this spring; it was great to see so many riders out during the week and at our events. We’re especially thrilled that 449 of the 913 riders joined us for the first time this spring,” said Anne Huisken, Active Transportation Coordinator.
GoByBike Week is a part of the City of Vernon’s larger strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to make active transportation the first choice to move around Vernon.
This year, 37 lucky riders won prizes for riding! Notably, Maite Castillo won the local grand prize: a new bike, 29” Titan Racing Rogue, donated by Satoca Bike. Linda Richard and Dave Meise won Neuron Mobility gift packs ($250 each), Jeffrey Palatnick, Dave Street, and a Trail Ninja (from the North Okanagan Cycling Society Youth program) each won a $100 Olympia gift card. Amber Arnold won the Vernon Bike Prize Trail.
GoByBike Week is organized across British Columbia by the GoByBike BC Society with the support of generous sponsors, including the Province of British Columbia, BC Transit, Exodus Travels, Black Press Media, and ICBC.
The City of Vernon would also like to thank all the local sponsors who helped make GoByBike Week possible. You can see a list of local sponsors and find more information by visiting https://gobybikebc.ca/vernon-north-okanagan/.
