Storm water protection outreach in celebration of Earth Day 2018

News

The City of Vernon is taking action to encourage storm water protection in celebration of Earth Day 2018.

The City is working with the Regional District of North Okanagan to support students and youth participating in the Yellow Fish Road program. Yellow Fish Road is Canada’s premier water education program targeted to reduce water pollution. The program educates the public about how pollutants enter the storm water system and the impacts they may have on fish, wildlife, and water quality for human use.

“Our storm water systems connects directly to our waterways,” says Vernon Mayor Akbal Mund. “It’s vital that we protect our creeks, streams and lakes in order to enhance the quality of life in the Okanagan. The Yellow Fish Road program is a great way to help educate children and adults that we need to be aware of what we put down our drains.”

Students will be volunteering to mark local storm drains with yellow fish symbols and distribute associated educational materials at various locations this week. Council, youth and staff are also taking action to mark storm drains with yellow fish symbols throughout Spirit Square to encourage storm water protection.
