Q1 2026 Policing Report
The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP reported increased overall calls for service and criminal offences in the first quarter of 2026, driven largely by rises in property crime, while violent crime saw a modest decrease overall. Targeted policing efforts resulted in multiple arrests, seizures, and proactive enforcement actions focused on repeat and high-risk offenders. Police continued to prioritize support for vulnerable persons through coordinated mental health responses and specialized investigative units, while maintaining strong community engagement through outreach, events, and volunteer programs. Ongoing training and resource development support operational effectiveness, reinforcing the detachment’s commitment to public safety, community trust, and policing excellence.

VOICE Society — Canada Day 2026 plans
The Vernon-Okanagan Inspired Community Events Society (VOICE) presented its plans for the 2026 Canada Day celebrations, outlining proposed activities, budget considerations, and a request for City support to help deliver a community-focused event. Key requests include in-kind support such as equipment, site access, operational assistance, traffic control, and permits, all supported by appropriate insurance. Council received the following Administrative Updates
- Odour Control Improvements – Okanagan Landing Bench Road — A new odour scrubber has been installed to address hydrogen sulfide levels in the sanitary system, using advanced clay and carbon media. Additional enhancements, including biological pre-treatment and a planned aeration system, aim to improve odour control, protect infrastructure, and support overall system performance. Administration will report back to Council on the effectiveness of these measures.
- 31 Street Infrastructure Improvements — Road resurfacing and storm and sanitary sewer repairs on 31 Street between 31 Avenue and 32 Avenue are scheduled to begin May 25, 2026, with construction expected to last approximately five weeks. Temporary road closures and traffic disruptions are anticipated, and Administration will work closely with affected residents and businesses to minimize impacts.
- Okanagan Landing Sewer Expansion Project — Construction is underway for sanitary sewer extensions in the Okanagan Landing area, with initial work completed in the Bella Vista area at Dunsmuir and Bosc Road. Remaining work at Weeks Road is planned for the summer, supporting continued infrastructure improvements and servicing capacity in the area.
Key Council decisions and approvals
Council addressed a range of new business items, including supporting regional advocacy by authorizing a submission to the BC Utilities Commission for coordinated energy planning in the Okanagan and receiving updates on noise regulation enforcement practices and the first quarter financial report. Zoning amendment for 6030 Okanagan Landing Road advances
Council approved first, second, and third readings of Bylaw 6072 to amend zoning for 6030 Okanagan Landing Road. Final adoption is conditional on measures for environmental protection, public access, and infrastructure, including land dedication for a Streamside Protection Enhancement Area and future trail, a City access right-of-way, and construction of a frontage road and multi-use path to City standards.
Bylaw adoptions and amendments
Council adopted several additional bylaws supporting financial planning, taxation, governance, and community management, including the 2026–2030 Financial Plan Amendment Bylaw and the 2026 Tax Rates Bylaw, which establish updated budget and taxation requirements for the year. Additional updates included amendments to parks regulations and fees, such as park use provisions and airport lease rates, along with election procedures. These bylaws contribute to maintaining effective municipal operations, regulatory clarity, and service delivery.
