Heritage Retention Incentive Grant approved

Council approved a $500 grant to the owner of 3001 25th Street for eligible expenses under the 2024 Heritage Retention Incentive Program. This program supports the preservation and maintenance of heritage properties in Vernon.

Council Discretionary Grants — October 2025 intake

Council approved several discretionary grants to support local organizations and community initiatives during the October intake. Funding was provided for projects that enhance services, programs, and resources for residents.

2026 grant applications

Council authorized staff to pursue grants supporting the Emergency Operations Centre and an Urban Forestry Strategy.

Staff will apply for up to $30,000 from the Union of BC Municipalities’ Community Emergency Preparedness Fund to cover Emergency Operations Centre equipment and training in 2026. If approved, the grant would fully fund the project and be reflected in the City’s 2026–2030 Financial Plan.

Council also approved a grant application for up to $175,000 to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Green Municipal Fund to develop a city-wide Urban Forestry Strategy. If the grant is successful, the City will contribute up to $43,750 from the Climate Initiatives Reserve Fund to support efforts to expand tree canopy and enhance environmental sustainability.

Council remuneration discussed

Council considered a deferred motion from December 1, 2025, proposing that remuneration rates for the Mayor and Council remain at 2025 levels for 2026 with no adjustments. This approach is considered best practice and helps ensure fairness and transparency for anyone considering running for office in the future.

Council has officially adopted Vernon’s new Official Community Plan (OCP), marking a major milestone in shaping the city’s future. The OCP is a comprehensive, long-term strategy that will guide land use, growth, and development over the next 20 years. Built on community input and collaboration, the plan reflects Vernon’s vision for a vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive city — where residents can live, work, move, and play.

Okanagan Landing sewer connection charge bylaws

Council gave first, second, and third readings to several bylaws that establish connection charges for properties in the Okanagan Landing area. These bylaws support the City’s ongoing efforts to extend the sanitary sewer system to help protect Okanagan Lake by reducing reliance on septic systems. Property owners in the affected areas will have the option to connect to the sewer system, with associated fees outlined in the bylaws.
