Cleanup continues at Kal Tire Place following flooding

News

Business on the main upper concourse of Kal Tire Place was operational while cleanup efforts on the lower levels were ongoing following a sewer backup that resulted from a broken water main on Saturday morning. Water from the water main caused significant flooding in Vernon and the pump station and sewer lines were quickly over capacity in the Alexis Park area.

Approximately 930 square meters of tile flooring have been removed and will be replaced along with drywall below the 60 centimeter mark. No mechanical systems were damaged as they are located above the affected area. Air scrubbers have eliminated any lingering odour. Environmental testing will be done throughout Kal Tire Place to ensure there is no bacteria left behind.

City staff are currently working with a restoration company to determine the extent of the damage and cost estimates.

All Kal Tire Place ice users have been moved to the Priest Valley Arena through Wednesday, while public skates and shinny hockey have been cancelled until at least next week. Staff at Kal Tire Place anticipate that the arena will be open for the Vernon Vipers home opener on Saturday, September 10.
