Budget Day is almost here. On Monday, December 1, City of Vernon Council will begin deliberating the City’s 2026 Budget — shaping the services, infrastructure, and investments that will guide our community in the year ahead.
This year’s budget discussions will reflect feedback gathered through recent public engagement and include one final opportunity for residents to share their input before decisions are made.
Balancing affordability and growth
Through surveys, open houses and online engagement, residents showed strong support for maintaining current service levels, improving public safety, and continuing to invest in core infrastructure like roads, sidewalks and sewer systems. People also expressed support for parks, trails and green space and felt that housing and affordability should remain a key focus. The majority of respondents suggested higher user fees in exchange for a lower tax rate and showed a desire to explore efficiencies.
As Vernon continues to grow, the 2026 budget focuses on financial sustainability while investing in the priorities that matter most to residents. With affordability at the forefront, Council is committed to maintaining essential services and advancing projects that support a vibrant, livable city, including driving progress on critical issues like public safety and traffic congestion.
Key priorities for 2026
The proposed budget aims to:
- Enhance public safety and reduce crime
- Ease traffic congestion and expand active transportation corridors
- Increase housing options and improve affordability
- Expand and upgrade recreation facilities and sports fields to meet growing demand
- Strengthen climate resilience by mitigating flood and wildfire risks
Funding the vision
These investments rely on diverse funding sources — not just property taxes. In Vernon, property taxes account for roughly 50 per cent of the total budget, with the remainder coming from sources including user fees, utility charges, developer contributions, grants, and reserves.
Next steps
The final budget will inform property taxes for 2026, which will be prepared for release in May.
