While sustainability is often associated most strongly with environmental issues such as climate action, habitat protection and pollution, the basis for sustainability is rooted in the balanced consideration of three fundamental components – environmental, social, and economical. The City of Vernon is committed to working toward a sustainable future. Since 2008, the City has initiated a variety of community engagement and education programs to support environmental stewardship and community sustainability. These initiatives reflect priorities contained in Council's Strategic Plan 2019 - 2022, the Official Community Plan (OCP) and Council resolutions, bylaws and policies.

Pilot Composting Project: The City successfully completed an initial pilot composting project and is in the process of determining the logistics of a second phase. Given the current global pandemic crisis, the details of the program are still be worked on. Please stay tuned to the City's public notifications and media releases for more information.
