Transportation Safety Improvements

Project State
Upcoming

This project will perform safety improvements to intersections and construct crosswalks on roadways that have been identified by a 2019 road network safety screening study and from public requests received throughout the year. These improvements address the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and motorists when using the roadway.

The following safety improvements will be made to the 25th Avenue & 34th Street intersection:

  • Construction of a concrete centre median on both the eastbound and westbound approaches of 25th Avenue. These medians will prevent unpermitted left-turns from private establishments that cross-cut multiple lanes of traffic and cause vehicle conflicts.
  • Construction of a smart right-turn channel by the addition a concrete apron. This is intended to cause a reduction in speed of right-turning vehicles, which increases safety for crossing pedestrians.
  • Changes to the traffic pattern at 27th Ave. A concrete splitter island will be implemented to prevent left-turns from 34th Street northbound to 27th Avenue.
  • Reconfiguration of the pedestrian refuge islands at the north west corner of the intersection to become fully wheelchair accessible.
  • Addition of thermoplastic bike lane green markings to increase the awareness of the presence of crossing cyclists, which may reduce motorist-cyclist conflicts.

The following crosswalks and crosswalk area improvements will be made at the following locations:

43rd Ave at 18th Street (Crosswalk and Pathway)

  • Construction of a crosswalk across 43rd Ave and extended curb returns. The crosswalk meets the demand for pedestrians commuting between the neighbourhood by Girouard Park and the Harwood neighbourhood and the extended curbs shorten the distance for crossing pedestrians and improves pedestrian visibility by motorists.
  • Construction of a bus pullout improving the ease of passenger embarking and disembarking.
  • Creation of a gravel pathway from 43rd Avenue to Girouard Park. The 3-metre-wide gravel path will allow access to the northern part of Girouard Park.

1500 block of 39th Avenue

  • Addition of sidewalk let-downs to an existing of a crosswalk across 39th Avenue.
