As cooler temperatures and recent precipitation reduce wildfire risk in the region, residents of Vernon will once again be permitted to enjoy small campfires on private property beginning at 12 p.m. (noon) on September 3, 2026.
This change follows the BC Wildfire Service's decision to lift the campfire prohibition throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre, which includes the City of Vernon.
While conditions have improved, residents are reminded that fire safety remains everyone's responsibility. Those planning to have a campfire should:
- Never leave a fire unattended
- Keep fires small and contained
- Have water or a hand tool nearby
- Fully extinguish fires before leaving them
- Burn only dry, seasoned wood
- Ensure your campfire is no larger than 1.5 feet high by 1.5 feet wide, as recommended by BC Wildfire Service
Please note that Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited.
Off-road vehicle restrictions also lifted
The BC Wildfire Service has also rescinded the off-road vehicle prohibition throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre. Residents using off-road vehicles are encouraged to continue exercising caution, as wildfire conditions can change quickly.
