Are you looking for a way to get involved in your community and volunteer with the City of Vernon?
Applications are now being accepted for 2024 Affordable Housing Advisory Committee, Tourism Commission and Board of Variance. Established by Council, these committees are comprised of both members of the public and elected officials. The committee’s role is to inform and advise Council on issues that relate to its respective mandate.
Affordable Housing Advisory Committee
The City is seeking seven (7) positions on the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee representing the following sectors:
- Two (2) ‘Community at Large’ representatives
- Two (2) ‘Builder’ representatives
- Two (2) ‘Not-for-Profit Housing’ representatives
- One (1) ‘Seniors (55+)’ representative
The objectives of the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee are to monitor and provide Council with milestone achievements of the implementation of the City’s Attainable Housing Strategy and to provide Council with advice on affordable housing matters.
Tourism Commission
The City is seeking eight (8) positions on the Tourism Commission representing the following sectors:
- Four (4) from the Accommodation Provider Sector
- Two (2) from the Arts & Culture Sector
- One (1) from the Attractions Sector
- One (1) from the Golf Sector
The Tourism Commission’s purpose is to develop Vernon as tourism destination through collaboration between tourism stakeholders, Council and Administration and assist with increasing Vernon’s market share of travelers to and within British Columbia. The Commission also aims to increase tourism-driven economic benefits to Vernon and identify and provide recommendations on programs and services that will enhance the tourism sector in Vernon. The Commission meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 8:00 a.m.
Board of Variance
The City is seeking five (5) individuals to join the Board of Variance. Consisting of volunteer community members, the Board of Variance operates independently of City Council and considers minor variances to the Zoning Bylaw on the grounds of hardship.
Terms for these positions are for three years (expiring January 2027). Board members should be prepared to attend meetings open to the public on a monthly basis; however, meetings will only be held as required, depending on applications.
