City looking for public feedback on new design for Kin Race Track Athletic Park

The City of Vernon has been working to develop a concept design for a new park at the former Kin Race Track site. The proposed Active Living Centre is one of the amenities planned to be integrated into this park.

Through a survey in late 2021, residents indicated that the site is valued as a place for running and walking, sports and cultural events, markets and festivals, and enjoyment of green space and natural wetland features. On January 10, 2022, initial concept designs were presented to Council. Council provided direction for a new concept plan to be prepared to incorporate additional sports amenities on the site.

At its Regular Meeting of April 25, 2022, Council endorsed the new draft concept plan for the purpose of community engagement. The City has now published the new draft concept design on engagevernon.ca and is launching a second public survey to hear from the community.

Residents are encouraged to explore the new design and take part in the survey.

“We want Kin Race Track Athletic Park to offer a variety of recreational opportunities, with something everyone can be excited about,” said Mayor Victor Cumming. “As a growing and thriving community, we want to ensure this park meets the needs of Vernon for years to come while offering an exciting destination for our visitors and for hosting sporting and cultural events.”

The survey is open now until May 23, 2022. Please take the survey and tell us what you think about the new design and how well it meets the needs of your family.

A summary of the public consultation responses and a final concept design will be presented to Council on June 13, 2022. Initial site preparation and construction of the new park is expected to begin in Fall 2022.
