A small kitchen fire in an apartment Monday evening has led to a reminder to be cautious while cooking.
On December 16th, Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) was called to an apartment building in the 3500 block of 27th Avenue. Upon arrival, Firefighters found smoke in the building and determined it was coming from a first floor unit. No fire alarm was sounding.
“A small fire was contained to the kitchen of a single apartment unit,” said Captain Dean Wakefield. “A toaster had been left on the stove top, and when the element was turned on, it melted the toaster and caused the fire.”
No injuries were reported and no one was displaced due to the incident.
During this holiday season, as more time is spent cooking large meals or baking, VFRS reminds everyone to pay extra attention in the kitchen.
“Don’t get distracted while using the stove or the oven,” said Captain Wakefield. “Never leave the kitchen unattended while cooking and stay focused on the task at hand. If you live in an apartment, also be sure to know how to activate the fire alarm in case of an emergency.”
