Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) is offering a reminder of the open burning rules within the City of Vernon as we get further into Fall and land owners may be considering cleaning up their properties.
Generally, open air burning is prohibited within the City of Vernon; however, in some circumstances it may be permitted for land clearing or agricultural purposes. Residents can apply for Open Burning Permits between November 1 and April 30 of each year, unless otherwise prohibited.
A permit application can be found on the City of Vernon website for download and must be submitted to VFRS in person for consideration on or after November 1, 2022.
Residents are also reminded that use of campfires and outdoor fireplaces is allowed at this time, so long as their use complies with the City of Vernon Good Neighbour Bylaw #4980.
If you choose to have a small campfire, please remember:
- Only burn dry, seasoned wood
- Never leave a fire unattended
- Be mindful of smoke’s impact on neighbours; don’t allow dense smoke or noxious odours
- Keep water or a hand tool nearby at all times when campfire is lit
- Ensure the fire is fully doused before walking away at the end of your time outside
