Vernon residents evacuated near Adventure Bay

News

1 a.m.: Approximately 60 Vernon residents have been evacuated because of an aggressive wildfire east of Adventure Bay. A Level 1 Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has been opened at the Vernon Recreation Centre for evacuated residents.

The Rank 2-3 fire began shortly after 9 p.m. on Saturday and quickly grew due to high winds and difficult terrain. Firefighters from Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) and B.C. Forest Service are on the scene and hope to contain the 0.4-hectare (1 acre) fire until morning, and a guard is currently around the fire.

The fire is currently one kilometre from residences and moving away from the Adventure Bay community.
