As Halloween approaches, Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) is encouraging residents to keep safety top of mind while enjoying all the fun that comes with the season.
Whether you're heading out to trick-or-treat, decorating your home, or hosting a gathering, a few simple precautions can help make Halloween safe and memorable for everyone.
Stay visible
With shorter daylight hours and increased pedestrian traffic on Halloween night, visibility is key.
- Add reflective tape or reflective accessories to costumes, or carry a flashlight or glow stick to help drivers see you.
- Choose lighter-coloured costumes whenever possible to increase visibility.
- Ensure costumes fit properly and allow for safe movement to help prevent trips and falls.
- Remind children to stay on sidewalks, use designated crosswalks, and look both ways before crossing the street.
Fire safety tips
Decorations help create a festive atmosphere, but it's important to keep fire safety in mind.
- Use battery-operated candles or glow sticks instead of open flames in jack-o'-lanterns.
- Keep decorations away from heat sources such as light bulbs, heaters, fireplaces, and candles.
- Ensure exits and walkways remain clear and accessible.
- Test smoke alarms regularly and make sure they are functioning properly.
Celebrate safely
VFRS reminds residents that fireworks and sky lanterns are prohibited within City of Vernon limits. Violations may result in fines, and Fire Prevention and Bylaw Enforcement personnel will be monitoring for compliance.
Residents are encouraged to choose safer alternatives such as glow sticks, flameless candles, Halloween movie nights, or bylaw-compliant campfires.
As families head out to celebrate, drivers are also reminded to slow down, stay alert, and watch for children crossing streets, particularly in residential neighbourhoods and after dark.
By taking a few simple precautions, residents and motorists can help ensure a safe and enjoyable Halloween for everyone.
Have a safe and happy Halloween!
