Social Planning Council hosts Housing Forum

Public Notice

Are you a private builder wanting to construct rental housing in Vernon? Are you interested in “aging in place” design? Are you curious about the tiny homes movement?

The City of Vernon, Social Planning Council, the Land Trust and Everton Ridge Homes are hosting a forum to provide information, ideas and networking opportunities for people interested in attainable housing and innovative designs.

The forum takes place

Thursday, May 19

3:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Schubert Community Centre

Everyone is welcome but the forum will be of particular interest to realtors, builders, private developers, housing non–profits and people considering building a new home.

The forum is broken down into three main segments and participants are welcome to pick and choose which sessions to attend. First on the agenda at 3 p.m. is BC Housing and CHMC to talk about provincial and federal programs. This will be a chance for the non-profit sector to connect with funders and for developers to understand what programs are available to the private sector.

The next session begins at 4 p.m. and includes a panel of “flash” presentations that cover topics in 10 minutes or less. Presentations include information on a local tiny homes project, an overview of the City of Vernon’s new Rental Housing Grants Program and information on changes to offsite requirements.

The final segment is at 5 p.m. and highlights the Safer Homes Guidelines. These are 19 easy steps to develop universal design for homes where people can age in place. After the presentation, participants will be invited to view the first Safer Home in Vernon and see up close how innovative and easy this program is to implement. Everton Ridge Homes will host an open house, provide a guided tour and answer questions on this new style of housing design being offered in the Okanagan.
