As Canada Day approaches, Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) is reminding residents and visitors that consumer fireworks and sky lanterns are not permitted within the City of Vernon. With the current high fire danger rating, preventing human-caused fires is more important than ever.

“With the current high fire danger rating in the city, it’s critical that everyone takes extra care,” said Fire Chief David Lind. “Under these conditions, even a small spark can start a fire that spreads rapidly. We’re asking residents to practice FireSmart habits around their homes and properties and to report any signs of smoke or fire immediately. We all have a role to play in protecting our community.”

There are plenty of safe and fun ways to celebrate Canada Day without fireworks, including:

  • Using glow sticks or noisemakers
  • Lighting battery-powered flameless candles
  • Enjoying a bylaw-compliant campfire where permitted

Using or storing consumer fireworks without a permit may result in fines of up to $300. Multiple fines may be issued for a single infraction.

The City thanks residents and visitors for helping reduce wildfire risk and keep our community safe this Canada Day.
