Carpool.ca is a free service available throughout the Okanagan. Users find matches based on their location or travel route and receive alerts when potential carpool matches are found.
The true costs of driving a vehicle are higher than most drivers would expect. According to Statistics Canada, the average household in British Columbia spends over $12,000 per year on transportation, making transport the second largest household expense next to shelter. Sharing your ride doesn’t just save you money – carpooling for a daily 20km round trip saves approximately 1000kgs of greenhouse gas emission per year per passenger.
Carpooling can also be rewarding. “Sharing the responsibility to drive can make your commute more enjoyable,” said City of Vernon Active Transportation Coordinator Angela Broadbent. “A recent study published by McGill University found that driving is the most stressful way to commute. Why not sit back and enjoy the ride while saving money and reducing your environmental footprint? It’s a win-win.”
Vernon employers that are interested in reducing employee parking demand and encouraging carpooling can contact Angela Broadbent, Active Transportation Coordinator, at abroadbent@vernon.ca or 250-550-7831.
