Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the Bradley Creek Wildfire, especially those who have been evacuated or are facing uncertainty during this difficult time.
While the wildfire is outside the City of Vernon, emergency events such as these can have impacts that extend beyond municipal boundaries. As a result, the City activated its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) on Saturday, August 1 to support displaced residents, coordinate local preparedness efforts, monitor changing conditions, and assist our neighbouring municipalities with fire suppression efforts.
Throughout this response, we have seen the strength, compassion and resilience of our communities come together. To those impacted, please know that you are not alone — our community is standing with you and will continue to provide support throughout this event.
We also want to express our sincere gratitude to the firefighters, emergency responders, supporting agencies, and volunteers who have been working tirelessly throughout this event. We are especially grateful for the leadership and efforts of the Okanagan Indian Band and BC Wildfire Service. Their dedication, expertise, and commitment to protecting people, property and our communities are deeply appreciated.
During cross-boundary emergencies, EOCs are often activated proactively to support regional coordination and preparedness, even when another agency or jurisdiction is leading the incident response.
Mayor and Council remain committed to supporting those affected and working alongside our neighbouring communities throughout this event. We continue to provide assistance where needed while supporting the agencies and local governments leading the wildfire response.
The Vernon Reception Centre is currently available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to help connect residents with temporary supports such as shelter, clothing and food.
