Firefighters respond to vehicle fire in elementary school parking lot

News

On Monday, February 3, 2020, at approximately 10:20 am, Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) responded to a vehicle fire in the parking lot of Harwood Elementary School.

“It appears the vehicle was involved in several crashes in the area before it stopped in the parking lot,” said Fire Captain Rob Cucheran. “When we arrived, no one was in the vehicle and we were able to extinguish the fire before it extended to the building or surrounding area.”

RCMP and BC Ambulance Service were also on scene.

“School was in session at the time of the fire, but no children were outside while we were there,” said Cucheran. “The fire created heavy smoke, but there was no immediate risk to students or staff of the school.”

Firefighters were finished on the scene just before 11:00 am. VFRS members later returned to the area to put down absorbent material where other damaged vehicles were leaking fluids due to earlier collisions. The incident is now under investigation.
