The City of Vernon continues to support the response to the Bradley Creek Wildfire alongside emergency partners. The wildfire is currently estimated at 2,603 hectares and remains out of control.
Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) crews continued patrolling high-risk areas throughout the day yesterday and overnight, monitoring for spot fires and new fire starts. VFRS has also deployed crews to provide additional support for wildfire response efforts in Spallumcheen.
There is currently no fire activity within the City of Vernon related to the Bradley Creek Wildfire.
Residents travelling in and around the North Okanagan are encouraged to check DriveBC before heading out to plan their route. Sections of Highway 97 are closed due to wildfire activity, and motorists are asked to avoid Westside Road whenever possible. Keeping these routes clear allows emergency personnel to move efficiently and supports ongoing firefighting efforts.
Boaters and recreational users are reminded to stay well clear of firefighting aircraft operating on Okanagan Lake. BC Wildfire Service aircraft require space to safely and efficiently collect water. If aircraft are nearby, please clear the area immediately and remain close to shore to avoid interfering with operations and help protect the safety of responders and the public.
Emergency Support Services
The Emergency Support Services (ESS) Reception Centre at Kal Tire Place is open to assist residents displaced by the Bradley Creek Wildfire.
Evacuees who require support with basic needs, such as shelter and food, can register for ESS in one of three ways:
- Visit the ESS Reception Centre at Kal Tire Place, 3445 43rd Avenue, Vernon
- Call the BC Evacuee Helpline at 1-800-387-4258 - Monday to Sunday: 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. (including statutory holidays)
- Complete Self-Service Registration online at ess.gov.bc.ca
Evacuees who are able to complete the registration process remotely do not need to attend the Reception Centre in person. ESS support is available by phone for those who can register remotely.
To receive ESS supports through e-transfer, evacuees must have the BC Services Card App.
Reception Centre hours are subject to change based on demand. Residents are encouraged to check the City of Vernon Facebook page for the most up-to-date operating hours before arriving.
Limited group lodging has been established at the Vernon Recreation Centre Auditorium for evacuees who require overnight accommodations. Evacuees must pre-register with ESS before accessing group lodging. Residents who are able to stay with family or friends are strongly encouraged to do so, as group lodging is intended for those who do not have other accommodation options.
Kal Tire Place operations
Kal Tire Place rentals will operate on a modified schedule. Ice bookings will continue as planned and are not impacted by Reception Centre operations. The walking track program at Kal Tire Place is cancelled. More information on schedules will be shared as it becomes available.
Community support
The City is grateful for the many offers of assistance from community members. At this time, volunteers are not being requested, and the City is not accepting donations.
Please do not bring donated items to the ESS Reception Centre. Should volunteer support or donations be needed in the future, information will be shared through the City's official communication channels.
