City of Vernon promotes water safety during National Drowning Prevention Week

Public Notice

With lakes, pools, and waterways at the heart of life in the Okanagan, the City of Vernon is encouraging residents to make water safety a priority during National Drowning Prevention Week.

Water activities are a cherished part of summer, but they also come with risks. National Drowning Prevention Week serves as an important reminder that many drowning incidents can be prevented through awareness, education, supervision, and safe practices around water.

The City of Vernon is proud to support drowning prevention through community education, aquatic programming, and year-round opportunities for residents to develop swimming and water safety skills.

Water safety tips
Residents are encouraged to remember these key water safety practices:

  • Always supervise children in and around water
  • Wear a properly fitted life jacket when boating or paddling
  • Know your limits and be aware of changing water conditions
  • Learn to swim and build your water safety knowledge
  • Be prepared and know what to do in an emergency
