News

The City of Vernon is hosting two modules of the International Association for Public Participation's (IAP2) Foundations in Public Participation training in Vernon. The Planning for Effective Public Participation module will be offered November 23 - 25, 2016. The Techniques for Effective Public Participation module will be offered February 16 – 17, 2017. Training is being delivered by the Canadian Trainers Collective.

If you are someone just starting out in public participation, or a seasoned veteran, you will find value in this professional development opportunity. This program provides practitioners with the structure, techniques and knowledge required for success in today's rapidly changing public engagement landscape.

Module 1 – Planning for Effective Public Participation (Three days) The planning module provides you with a proven structure for developing a public participation plan that will fit any size of project. Participants will learn the importance of defining a project scope, setting clear objectives, delivering a promise to the public, and determining the appropriate level of public participation. In addition, the course will cover how every public participation initiative must be accompanied by a communications strategy and evaluation plan.

Module 2 – Techniques for Effective Public Participation (Two days) Once you have completed the planning course, you are ready to add 50+ practical tools and methodologies to your public participation toolkit. This course provides an introduction to a range of practical tools and techniques, including which are appropriate to use at each of the five levels of IAP2's Public Participation Spectrum. In addition, participants will have an opportunity to try out or observe a number of specific techniques including World Cafe, Card Storming, Revolving Conversation, and more.

You'll leave with a wealth of reference materials, IAP2 tip sheets, and a process to pick the appropriate techniques to meet your objectives. The cost for this five-day course is $1,900 for early-bird registration prior to September 16, and $2,100 for regular registration.
