City to create plan for panhandling issue

News

Council directed staff at the Council Meeting on Tuesday, May 24, 2016, to create a comprehensive plan with a rapid implementation component regarding panhandling in Vernon. Staff will work with a subcommittee of Vernon City Council—Councillors Catherine Lord, Juliette Cunningham and Scott Anderson—and the Social Planning to develop a plan that will include a range of actions to reduce panhandling across the city.

Council is recommending a measured approach to the issue of panhandling, with a focus on safety at intersections pertaining to the Safe Streets Act as well as providing information on contributing to social agencies that provide support to individuals and families most in need in our community.

Recommendations will be brought forward for Council’s consideration at the next Meeting of Council on June 13.
