Age & Dementia Friendly Community Plan

Since Spring 2022, the City has been developing an Age and Dementia Friendly Community Plan. This Plan will help ensure that the City of Vernon understands and accommodates the needs of older adults and people living with dementia and their care partners as our community grows.

Age-friendly Communities

Age-friendly communities help seniors live safely, enjoy good health and stay involved and connected with others. They are places where older people are recognized and respected for their skills, abilities and contributions. Age-friendly features, programs and policies benefit people of all ages and abilities, making the City more inclusive and accessible for everyone.

Dementia-friendly Communities

Dementia-friendly communities are places where people living with dementia and their care partners are respected, included and supported. These communities support people living with dementia to remain independent for as long as possible by creating more accessible places and by raising awareness to reduce social stigma and isolation. Over 2023-2024, the City received funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) to pilot some special activities to reduce social stigma and make Vernon a more dementia friendly community.
