Assent Voting

RESIDENTS

You can vote in a referendum in Vernon if you meet all of the following criteria. You are:

• able to show proof of residency within the City of Vernon;
• 18 years of age or older on the day of voting;
• a Canadian citizen;
• a resident of British Columbia for at least six months prior to voting day (April 14, 2022);
• Are not disqualified under the Local Government Act, or any other enactment, or by law from voting in a local election.

• Voter registration is done at the time of voting.

NON-RESIDENTS

You must provide proof of ownership of the property for which are voting and you meet all of the following requirements. You are:

• 18 years of age or older on the day of voting;
• a Canadian citizen;
• a resident of British Columbia for at least six months prior to voting day (April 14, 2022);
• a registered owner of real property in the City of Vernon for at least 30 days immediately before voting day (September 14, 2022);
• not disqualified under the Local Government Act, or any other enactment, or by law from voting in a local election.

• If there is more than one person on title for the property, you must provide written permission from the majority of property owners authorizing you as the sole individual to vote for that property.

Opportunity is provided for people entitled to vote in an assent voting to apply to act as volunteer scrutineers to observe the assent vote proceedings. If applications are received, scrutineers for and against the question must be appointed.  Only one (1) scrutineer for the question and one (1) against the question can be present at voting places, at counting proceedings, or at other places where scrutineers are entitled to be present. Scrutineers in attendance at a voting place must make a solemn declaration to preserve the secrecy of the ballot.

The application period for accepting assent voting scrutineer applications is August 30, 2022 beginning at 9 a.m. and ending on September 9, 2022 at 4 p.m.
