Project State

May 2021 Update:  The project is now complete and open to traffic. One final portion of the new intersection will be completed later this year, with an upgrade to the railway crossing warning system. The delay is due to supply chain issues. In the meantime, temporary modifications have been made to improve safety until the railway crossing upgrade can be completed

2021 UPDATE: The project has started back up and is expected to be completed (and open to traffic) by end of April. The schedule is dependent on the actual opening date of the asphalt plant and will be weather dependent. Additional works will be required by CN Rail to upgrade its crossing warning signals. That portion of the project is anticipated to be complete this fall.

UPDATE: The contractor is working to finalize all the remaining concrete work and will place barriers to close the project site on the west side of the railway to traffic.  Local traffic will be permitted on 29 Street and barricades will be placed on 39 Avenue blocking the railway crossing. The 29 Street multi-use path and sidewalk is in use for pedestrians.  Pedestrians will be required to continue bypassing around the site until the remaining works are complete. Unseasonable cold weather has impacted paving and the remaining paving will be completed in the spring. The project is within budget.

UPDATE: Delays arising from design changes related to the BC Hydro casing work and pole relocations will impact the opening of the road. The most recent contractor schedule has the project substantially complete by the end of November and the project team is working with all parties to mitigate the delays to push towards an earlier completion.

Construction is scheduled to take place between March and October 2020. During this time, there will be road closures on 29 Street (between 41 Avenue and 39 Avenue) and 39 Avenue (between 28A Street and 31 Street). Detour routes will be in place during construction. All businesses in the area will remain open and can be easily accessed

UPDATE: A project Open House will be held at the Schubert Centre on February 12, 2020 from 5-7pm.

UPDATE: The project is waiting for final design and approvals from BC Hydro in addition to the finalizing of the CN crossing agreement.  The project will proceed once all approvals have been obtained.

This is the final phase for the 30th Street corridor which connects 30th Street to 29th Street from 37th Avenue to 41st Avenue. The project includes the construction of a new road through the Civic Arena property, rehabilitation of old sanitary, storm, and road infrastructure, a separated multi-use pathway on the east side of 30th/29th Street and a new intersection connection for the railway crossing at 39th Avenue.  This project is an important milestone for Vernon’s transportation improvements as it will finalize a key North/South Arterial route for pedestrians, cyclists, vehicles and transit from Polson Park, through the downtown, to the Village Green Centre at 48th Avenue. RDNO is including the watermain replacement on 29th Street and 39th Avenue.

The project is at 97% design and will be tendered in the new year.
