Days/Hours:            Varies / 40 hours per week

 

Reporting to the Manager, Recreation Operations, the Supervisor – Arena Operations is responsible for the ongoing operation, maintenance, and cleaning of two arenas consisting of three indoor ice sheets and one outdoor rink, and oversees a small team of Arena Attendants,  Building Service Workers (BSW’s), Conversion Workers, and Ice Monitors. In addition, this role provides operational direction to Custodians while working in the arenas.

 

Duties Include:

  • Leads, trains, schedules, and directs the activities of the arenas staff.
  • Organizes and prioritizes tasks, schedules assignments and procedures to ensure that service delivery meets established standards of maintenance, cleanliness, and sanitation.
  • Responsible for the annual maintenance of the arenas including its project management and the coordination of staff and contractors.
  • Effectively communicates and exchanges information with staff both verbally and in writing including recording and sharing in the log books.
  • Supervises and supports the team and individuals to accomplish objectives.
  • Serves as the primary contact with City of Vernon maintenance and fleet department staff and contractors for repair and renovation work.
  • Maintains the preventative maintenance program and delegates or performs required tasks based on work orders.
  • Inspects arenas and equipment and performs a variety of minor maintenance and repairs or recommends and coordinates the provision for major repair work to be completed.
  • Monitors the building systems and makes minor adjustments required to air and water temperatures.
  • Operates and maintains the refrigeration plant including accurately recording readings in log books, making adjustments to the refrigeration plant controls, and draining the chiller as needed.
  • Operates and maintains ice resurfacing equipment including checks and adjusts ice depths to maintain optimum thickness, monitors and logs service on the equipment, and changes blades and propane bottles.
  • Provides exceptional customer service to the public and user groups through effective communication and a willingness to assist in response to requests.
  • Ensures compliance of policies with respect to ice usage and safety regulations for all users of the arenas.
  • Meets with user groups, including special event planners and contractors to coordinate the set up and take down of equipment for rentals and special events.
  • Participates in and/or conducts safety meetings and crew talks and ensures monthly facility and safety inspections are completed.
  • Maintains MSDS and WHMIS records for all products used in the arenas.
  • Orders supplies, chemicals, tools, and equipment and maintains inventory system.
  • Assists with, and makes recommendations for the annual budget.
  • Promotes and supports the City’s culture of health, safety, well-being and respect and ensures compliance with all related policies and legislation to sustain a healthy and sustainable work environment, and reports risks and non-compliance issues to the Manager, Recreation Operations.
  • Provides input to the Manager, Recreation Operations on the performance evaluation of staff.
  • Performs janitorial and custodial duties as identified on the task lists.
  • May perform some of the duties as those they supervise.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • All persons employed by the City of Vernon will be required to assist the City in providing emergency services.  Duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties.

Required Education And Experience:

  • Refrigeration Operators Certificate (formerly Fifth Class Power Engineer Certificate with Refrigeration Endorsement)
  • Completion Leadership and Supervisory Courses
  • Minimum four years recent experience in a progressively responsible arena operations role, including of which at least two years have been  in a supervisory or leadership capacity
  • Current BC Driver’s Licence, Class 5
  • A combination of related education and experience may be considered

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:

  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to coach and develop employees to achieve success
  • Safety conscious with a demonstrated knowledge of WorkSafe, Technical Safety BC, and City of Vernon safety policies, procedures and regulations
  • Able to pre-plan, schedule, and direct work for daily operations and projects for staff and contractors
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with an emphasis on effectively prioritizing in a busy environment
  • Considerable knowledge of standard methods, materials, and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, and cleaning of arena facilities
  • Mechanically inclined with a working knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, mechanical and electrical systems and the ability to make minor repairs
  • Working knowledge of preventative maintenance and automated building programs
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and general office equipment
  • Ability to learn and utilize City software including but not limited to ICity and CityWorks
  • Possesses excellent customer relations skills
  • Effectively resolves minor problems and exercises diplomacy and tact when dealing with staff, contractors, and members of the public
  • Effectively communicates with others, verbally and written, to both obtain and give accurate and relevant information
  • Self-disciplined and works well with a minimum supervision
  • Ability to perform manual work and sustain the physical demands of the position
  • Shift work may be required occasionally including working evenings and weekends
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an acceptable Police Information Check

Preferred Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:

  • Fourth Class Power Engineer Certificate
  • Lift Truck Operator Certificate (formerly Fork Lift Operator Certificate)
  • Considerable experience with preventative maintenance programs
  • Considerable experience with computer building automation systems
  • Good understanding of ice sports including hockey, ringette, speed skating and figure skating
  • Emergency First Aid with CPR
