The City of Vernon is exploring designating the rail corridor as a “transportation corridor” in the Official Community Plan. This designation would prevent non-transportation development on the rail corridor should service on the line be discontinued. The City of Vernon will also work with rail companies towards maintaining service on the corridor for as long as possible.
The proposed amendment would protect the existing rail lines in Vernon from being redeveloped or sold for non-transportation related uses. Many municipalities in the North Okanagan have taken steps to designate their rail corridors as transportation corridors in an attempt to prevent development of unused rail lines that would stop the corridor from being used for transportation purposes in the future. Population growth and rising energy costs must be considered when planning for future transportation needs. Alternative transportation options for the movement of goods and people should be preserved.
