Improvements have been made to 20 Street between 43 Avenue and 48 Avenue to encourage more walking and cycling to and to make the area safer for children travelling to and from Harwood Elementary School.

The travel lanes have been narrowed to calm traffic travelling down the street, and a multi-use path was constructed on the west side of the street. A sidewalk has been completed on the east side of the street and cycling lanes are now available in both directions. Landscaping separates pedestrians from the street traffic and street lighting has been improved, making a walk through the neighbourhood a safer and more enjoyable experience.

Why was this Route Selected?

This section of 20 Street was selected as a result of safety concerns raised by Harwood Elementary School staff, students and parents. During the School Travel Planning Initiative for Harwood Elementary, safety was identified as one of the biggest reasons why children did not walk or bicycle to school.
