City of Vernon Mayor Rob Sawatzky will perform a ceremony on Saturday, June 23 at 11:00 a.m. in Polson Park near the windmill by the pond that Duchess swam in. The ceremony is to dedicate a plaque, donated by the citizens who loved Duchess, to the memory of Duchess.
Duchess, the swan who has graced Vernon's Polson Park for almost 25 years, has passed away..
It was reported this morning to City Staff that she was deceased. When Staff checked, she was found in the Polson Park pond. She appeared to die from natural causes. She was injured February 20th, nursed back to health by City Staff, returned to the Park on February 24th and was doing very well. But, Duchess may have found all of the trauma and upset too much to bear.

Duchess The Swan Goes Home to Polson Park
City of Vernon employee, Ron Gibson and Bylaw Staff returned Duchess to Polson Park last Friday, February 24 around 3:00 p.m.

Duchess The Swan Saved By City of Vernon Staff
Duchess, the swan who has graced Vernon's Polson Park for almost 25 years, was involved in an incident Monday, February 20th. She was found by the edge of Highway 97 bleeding and with damage to a wing that was perhaps caused overnight by a dog, coyote or vehicle incident.
The Bylaw Enforcement section of the Protective Services Division of the City of Vernon was called, and officers responded to assist. Once it was determined that Duchess was injured, a call was put out to another City employee, Ron Gibson.
