UPCOMING PUBLIC PRESENTATION ON WALKABLE COMMUNITIES

DATE: Thursday, March 25th
TIME: 7:00 PM
LOCATION: Schubert Centre, 3505 30 Avenue

ALL ARE INVITED - FREE TO ATTEND

We are fortunate to be able to work with Dan Burden, who is an internationally recognized authority on bicycle and pedestrian facilities and programs. Dan has 35 years of experience in developing, promoting and evaluating alternative transportation facilities and sustainable community design. In 2009 he started the Walkable and Livable Communities Institute to assist cities throughout the world in becoming more walkable, bicycle friendly, socially engaged and welcoming places by improving the built environment. Dan was celebrated by Time Magazine in its June 18, 2001 issue as one of the world's six most important civic innovators and his publications have helped a number of cities create more walkable communities by rethinking and redesigning their transportation systems.

Dan will be working with staff on a "walkability audit" of the City Centre to assess the accessibility of the City Centre for alternative modes of transportation and to identify potential initiatives to explore. This will be followed by a public presentation where he will discuss the results of the audit and provide an overview of walkable communities.

You can learn more about Dan Burden and walkable and livable communities at www.walklive.org and www.walkable.org.

During the development of the City of Vernon Official Community Plan 2008, the City Centre was identified as the key redevelopment area intended to become an economic and social anchor for the entire City. One of the priority recommendations was to prepare a more detailed plan for the future of the City Centre. The Vernon Downtown Concept Plan, prepared in 1998, was the last planning effort to look at the City Centre in a comprehensive way. The neighbourhood plan process will build on work that has already been done and engage the public to identify a long term vision and key strategies necessary to facilitate the implementation of the plan.

Process
The process to develop the City Centre Neighbourhood Plan is outlined below. There are several opportunities for you to be directly involved in the process and we look forward to your participation.
