D.A.R.E. ProgramD.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) is a prevention education program designed to equip elementary school children with skills to recognize and resist social pressures to experiment with tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. This unique program was developed in 1983 and uses uniformed law enforcement officers to teach a formal curriculum to students in a classroom setting. D.A.R.E gives special attention to fifth and sixth grade students to prepare them for entry into middle/high school where they are most likely to encounter pressure to use drugs. During this 10 week core curriculum the students also learn about friendship foundations, peer pressure, personal pressure, ways to be in charge (say no) and how to use a decision making model to make wise choices. We all benefit! The students receive valuable information regarding the pressures to experiment with drugs and to get to know the police on a more personal level. The police interact with the youth in a classroom environment and develop a rapport with them that ordinarily may not be available to them. The DARE Program began in the Vernon School District # 22 in January 2000 with six elementary schools participating. The program has expanded each year since and we now have a total of 13 schools involved in the 2004/2005 school year:
The DARE Program if funded totally by donations from the Vernon Community.
