Earth Day 2012

Activities scheduled as part of the City of Vernon Earth Day event have been postponed until 2013. The event, which draws attention to the contributions of youth to sustainability, will be held next year when youth participation in the Be the Change rally can be fully undertaken with the participation of
School District 22.

In advance of Earth Day the City of Vernon is accepting nominations for local leaders in sustainability. To learn more and to nominate friends, family,
co-workers, etc. for Vernon’s Sustainability Awards visit www.vernon.ca/sustainability_awards. Celebrate your fellow community members who will be recognized at an awards presentation event in June during Environment Week.

The deadline for the Inquisitive Clips Film Competition is also Earth Day. Make a film 5 minutes or less relating to this year’s water theme and submit it to the competition - it’s that easy! Visit www.vernon.ca/inquisitiveclips for more information.

Earth Day 2011

In 2011 Vernon's Be the Change youth rally was smaller than usual due to rain and cool weather, but a number of students still came out to speak, participate and support the event. Their enthusiasm was outstanding as always.

Here are some of the groups that attended the 2011 Earth Day Celebration with information and activities to share with the community:

Earth Day 2010

In 2010, Vernon's Be The Change youth rally took place in the Library/Museum Square. They filled the square with voices and music, sharing ideas and talking about how and why the environment is important to them. What a great way to see our future leaders take charge!

Earth Day 2009

Wednesday, April 22

On Earth Day, City staff organized and hosted an afternoon Earth Day Celebration in the Library/Museum Square.

Information about City and Regional District environmental initiatives and opportunities for community participation were highlighted. More than 800 tree seedlings and reusable EnviroBags were given away to all community participants in this event and more were distributed at key locations throughout the North Okanagan.

Visitors were encouraged to sign up for future events or to receive information about opportunities to be involved in sustainability initiatives being undertaken by local groups.

Following the rally, over 300 area youth joined the
City's festivities at the Library/Museum square,
including a group of students who performed
through singing and drumming for the crowd.

Students from School District 22 organized the Second
"Be the Change" rally in Polson Park for Earth Day.
This activity was introduced to Vernon City Council by
a small delegation of youth, prior to the event

The afternoon event was a huge success. Thank you to all community participants, especially the students from School District 22 who brought their talent, energy and enthusiasm!

The design featured on the EnviroBags was the winning submission in the 2008 reusable bag design contest held on Rivers Day 2008. Two other winning drawings were featured on the Earth Day posters and newspaper ads.

The City of Vernon is the first community in British Columbia to partner with Earth Day Canada, a national organization created to provide Canadians with practical knowledge and tools that assist in reducing our impact on the environment.
Through the EcoAction Team program, Vernon residents can use an online calculator as a tool to help reduce household energy use, conserve water, reduce transportation fuel use, save on home heating and cooling, and learn how to shop, cook and garden with sustainability in mind.

The comprehensive, self-administered online EcoAction activities calculator (available by clicking on the link to the left) was officially launched on Earth Day 2009.
