Mayor's Welcome

Welcome to our fine City in the Valley, whether you intend to stay for a short time or for a lifetime.

I am newly elected as mayor after 21 years in Vernon as a doctor in Family Medicine. As a young man growing up in Saskatchewan I was exposed to the charms of Vernon a number of times by my parents. So, when the opportunity came, my wife Betsy and I chose Vernon to raise our two children and we have never regretted our choice.

Vernon is blessed with a Mediterranean climate, has lakes, orchards and wineries in our valley, and is surrounded by mountains nearby. We have hiking, and cycling trails galore, with more being built all the time, and in winter Silver Star and Sovereign Lake ski areas provide world class Nordic and Alpine skiing, just 20 minutes away.

We also have education, and arts and culture opportunities with Okanagan College, our Museum, art galleries, and performing Arts Center. Our City Center Neighborhood Plan and Official Community Plan provide blueprints for making us even more attractive and vibrant. Very few places can offer our combination of climate, geography, education, lifestyle, multiculturalism, and business support services.

We have a great blend of experience, knowledge, and dedication on our council and I look forward with real pleasure to working with this fine group of colleagues for the benefit of our citizens.

Sincerely,
Rob Sawatzky
