Communities in Bloom (CiB) is Canada's program for improving civic pride and quality of life through community participation in the areas of environmental awareness, heritage conservation and beautification.
The appeal of this program goes beyond attractive landscapes. CiB's strength comes from building community involvement through encouragement, education, cooperation and friendly competition. Taking care of our environment and improving community spirit makes everyone a winner!
National beautification programs have flourished in England, Ireland and France since the 1980s. Communities in Bloom was launched in Canada in 1995 with 29 communities receiving awards that first year. In 2009, over 500 Canadian communities participated at the provincial, national and international levels of competition.
Communities first join the CiB program at the provincial level, competing against towns or cities of the same population category.
In July each year, communities are evaluated during a 2-day visit by trained volunteer judges who have a passion for gardening and extensive experience in the volunteer sector. |
